Kiteboarding's Original King of the Air

Last summer I had the pleasure of meeting Flash Austin in Maui. For those of you who don't know him, Flash was the winner of Red Bull's FIRST ever "King of the Air" competition. He was, and is GREAT for this sport. Click on the picture below to start the clip.

Bill with Flash Austin in Maui; summer 06 Robby Naish describes Flash as 'the best rider in the world hands down'.

On a day that was 'scary windy' for most kiters - with gusts in the 35 to 38 mph range - Flash was out there boosting 40 foot jumps on a 14 meter AIRUSH kite. Here's an AVVENU to the video clip (downloadable right off my home hard drive!) that gives you a feel for his spirit, energy, and authenticity.

Flash is still a great rider - but Naish have ripped up his contract - all the sponsored riders are 120lb kids these days.

He's now doing downhill mountainbike rides to make cash, but still riding big and usually found making progress waaaay upwind of everyone else. Sad that one of the founding figures can't find a team.

I'm still a huge fan. My first board was a Naish TT - Flash Austin signature model :-). Unlike surfing which hits the MASSES.. this sport is still not big enough to allow riders beyond their teens to be able to support themselves as riders. Maybe it will happen someday. Nonetheless, i'm a fan and glad he helped pioneer ths sport and all our addictions.
